Art & D.T

ART

At Madginford Primary school, we value children’s creativity, individuality and the development of artistic skills. Our bespoke Art curriculum is underpinned and represented by our school values.

Through the art curriculum, we aim to give children freedom to develop a range of skills. We want them to be able to plan, create, explore and review their own ideas in a range of artistic techniques including drawing, painting, printing, working in 3D, developing textiles and using digital technology.

All children have the opportunity to develop a variety of skills and build upon these as they progress through the school.

They generate ideas: Children have the knowledge & skills to experiment with & adapt ideas to inspire their own works of art. Their sketchbooks should showcase their ideas & thoughts, demonstrating favourite techniques & colours, providing inspiration for future learning.

They take inspiration from the greats: children should have regular exposure to artists & designers in all areas of the curriculum. They should explore the techniques of artists, designers & architects from different periods in time as well as from different cultures. Children should be able to evaluate & discuss these works using the language of art & design.

They master techniques: through regular practice & perseverance, children develop their knowledge of techniques linked to drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles & digital media.

All units of work have artists and their artworks at the heart of the planning. We include artists from different cultural backgrounds and time periods and enjoy sharing these with the children, developing their appreciation and enthusiasm for art.

Each child receives their own personal sketchbook, and it is there for them to express themselves and their learning for example, through the use of different art mediums.

By the time the children leave Madginford, we aim for them to be confident in their artwork, not be afraid to make mistakes and be ambitious as well as proud of what they have accomplished. We hope the children will continue to thrive in the subject when moving forward in their education.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

Design and Technology is about providing opportunities for children to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others' needs.

We are excited by our move to Kapow Primary's primary D.T. curriculum. Big Ideas are carefully planned and sequenced throughout each phase, building on prior learning in order to consolidate and secure understanding and skills.

Through inspiring, rigorous and practical projects, children make their way through the design process with a key focus on evaluation throughout the project.

Designing: creating design criteria which demonstrates an understanding of context, user and purpose. From this, children generate, develop and share their ideas with a design plan.

Making: plan how to create their design selecting the range of tools, components and materials needed. Children create their product by using a range of practical skills and techniques.

Evaluating: identifying areas of strength in their design and product and those products made and designed by others before thinking about areas that need to be developed.

Improve: use the evaluation stage to suggest improvements to better meet the design criteria.

Through these units, we also learn and apply a set of technical skills including structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food. The children also draw upon knowledge and skills within Maths, Science, computing and Art.

Through research, children will find out about inventors, designers, engineers, chefs and manufacturers who have developed ground-breaking products. These inspirational individuals are from a range of countries and time periods.

Children are taught to use age appropriate tools safely and given opportunities to develop skills as they progress through school. By the time they leave MPS, children will have a sound understanding of key principles of design and the skills to use a range of tools to create their own designs.
